A battery needs both surplus energy and somewhere useful to send it

The strongest battery case usually combines solar exports available for charging with grid imports later in the day. Capacity alone does not show how much a household will save.

A solar-charged battery cannot capture more energy than the household would otherwise export.

Stored energy only avoids purchases when the home would otherwise import electricity after charging.

Round-trip losses

Some energy is lost during charging and discharging, so delivered energy is lower than the energy sent into the battery.

Capacity and power answer different questions

Energy capacity in kWh

Usable capacity is the energy available for normal cycling. Compare usable capacity, not only the larger nominal figure.

  • Expected daily cycling
  • Warranty years, cycles and throughput
  • Retained capacity at the warranty endpoint

Power output in kW

Power determines how much load the battery can supply at once. Check continuous and peak power against the appliances you expect it to support.

  • Single-phase or three-phase arrangement
  • Large appliance start-up loads
  • Inverter and existing solar compatibility
Backup and VPP choices

Ask what happens when the grid fails

Backup is not automatic

Solar and batteries may shut down during an outage unless the system is specifically designed and wired for backup. Confirm which circuits are backed up, the maximum backup power and whether solar can recharge the battery while the grid is unavailable.

A VPP may offer credits or other benefits in exchange for controlling part of the battery. Check minimum reserve, event limits, exit fees, contract length and how the offer changes your retail tariff.

How the Cheaper Home Batteries discount is structured

Eligible new batteries connected to new or existing rooftop solar can create small-scale technology certificates. Installations must meet all program, product and installer rules.

6.8 per supported kWh before size tapering

The factor applies at 100% through 14 kWh, 60% above 14 through 28 kWh, and 15% above 28 through 50 kWh. The dollar discount also depends on the certificate value and how it is assigned, so use the written installed quote and official calculator for the final amount.
